When Plarium set out to create the mobile fantasy RPG, they weren’t aiming small. Think deep strategy, a massive roster of champions, and a game world that’s as deadly as it is visually stunning.
In this exclusive peek behind the scenes, the team shares what it takes to keep Raid: Shadow Legends fresh, fierce, and fun - from fine-tuning difficulty and sneaking in hilarious Easter eggs to imagining what their champions would be doing if they had desk jobs (spoiler: Kael would be that chemistry teacher).
Read on to discover how the minds behind Teleria build epic experiences - and how they'd survive (or not) in the game’s brutal world.
What was the original inspiration behind Raid: Shadow Legends?
We set out to build the ultimate mobile fantasy RPG. Deep strategy, killer visuals, and a champion roster that just doesn’t quit. And for us personally? We loved the idea of having hundreds of unique, epic champions (we’re at 850 and counting!) and being able to argue over who’s the GOAT.
What’s your favorite moment or Easter egg in the game?
Our developers often enjoy embedding nods to popular culture or community-inspired jokes for players to discover. And let’s just say... There may or may not also be a champion who bears a suspicious resemblance to someone on the dev team.
That is really fun! And 850 champions is crazy! So tell us, if your game’s protagonists had normal day jobs, what would they be?
Kael would be a chemistry teacher with anger issues. Coldheart? Ice cream truck driver with zero chill. Galek's obviously a CrossFit coach. The Arbiter? A doctor or therapist, obviously.
And how do you balance fun and difficulty in the gameplay?
Playtests. Lots of playtests. And data. And a little sweat to get the balance just right to ensure that challenges are rewarding without being frustrating. Special shout-out to our amazing community of players for all their amazing feedback! We listen!
Name the weirdest idea someone seriously pitched during development.
A romance mode. We love our champions, but…
And if your team made a game inspired by your office culture, what kind of game would it be?
Probably a co-op sim where everyone’s running to hit deadlines while dodging nerf darts and espresso crashes. It’d also emphasize collaboration, innovation, and a very diverse cast.
And to end things on a fun note: If your game world were real, what’s the first thing you’d do in it?
Probably run. Then immediately try to befriend a tanky support champion and never leave their side. Then, explore the diverse regions of Teleria, meeting various champions, and experiencing the game's rich lore firsthand.
